and there is plenty of fun to be had there: botanical gardens, museums, the beach, pools, some great used-book stores and thrift shops, movies, boat rides on the bay, and John Ringling's beautiful Gothic mansion. I don't need to be flung against a bunch of strangers in a giant, spinning tea cup.So, when my brother mentioned his proposal to my mom, her FIRST words were "And what was your sister's reaction?" When he confessed that it had been tepid at best, mom recommended that we all go on a cruise instead.
I briefly wondered if they were running a good cop / bad cop scam on me. Because normally, I wouldn't be all that jazzed over the idea of going on a cruise with my whole family, but compared to Disney World it sounds like heaven. At least on a big ship, I can find a secluded lounge chair somewhere; order some tall, fruity, rum-based beverages; and read a good book.

That's right. Cruise ships have something, or nothing going on at all hours. And you don't have to worry about coordinating cars to drive someplace, etc. so you can go back to your room and take a power nap any time you please.
Different cruise lines offer a variety of focuses/features for different types of vacationers. Talk to a travel agent, if you like, to learn more about what different lines have to offer and hopefully you can all find a cruise that has entertainment/activities of interest for all of the adults as well as the kids.
Ummm... if this cruise comes off, you probably won't have a whole lot of secluded time, because one or another of your nieces and nephews will want to spend that time with you...
Actually, I think spending some time doing something fun (for all of us) with my older nieces and nephews in particular would be great. I'd certainly rather go for a dip in the pool with them, or take them snorkeling, than walk around Disney.
Sounds like at times you are the advice receiver, rather than giver!! When I suggested a cruise, I hadn't given it a lot of thought, but was instead a desperation suggestion to the Disney scene. But I think it could actually work. To your fine responder who suggested contacting a travel agent for info on various focus cruises , he/she should know that bargain rates are a primary consideration for your Mom and Bil, and perhaps for Chris et. al.
P.S. Have never hated any cruise-- no matter what, having meals served, cabin cleaned, fresh bedlinens provided nightly, and plenty of lounge chairs at the pool and elsewhere can't be bad!
