Who names these roads?

We've all seen some funny street names around here, like Jones Sausage Road in Raleigh, which also used to boast a Jackass Road. Today, I was in a northern Durham neighborhood and was compelled to take this picture. I'm just saying.

I know I've been on a Hardscrabble Road here in New Jersey...
I wish I could remember if it's been colonized by McMansions or not...

"McMansions" LOL! Thank you, Faith. "McMansions" hits the nail on the head.

We lived near a very nice neighborhood in Cary with a carnival theme. Streets were named Carousel Horse, Brass Ring, Candy Apple, etc. So we nicknamed the streets Carousel Hos, Brass Balls, Candy A**, etc. Yeah, we're class.

Now we live in an exclusively Hawaiian-themed neighborhood, where we can't even pronounce some of the street names properly: Laa La, Kamehameha, Mohonua, Haina, Apuwai. Then there are the lucky folks that live on very pronounceable streets like Awini and Akaka.....

What are these developers thinking? Is there a course in public planning school on choosing street names which these folks audited? Apparently these people don't realize that residents have to look at these names everyday, on mail, address labels, checks, Christmas cards, and that we face constant jeering from friends and family who live on normal streets like "3rd."

oh, I know that house. I think it's on the corner of "Hardscrabble" and "Cardboard Box". I'm just saying, too.

Generally the appropriate way to name the streets is to theme them on whatever natural wonder you destroyed to build the subdivision. Did you drain the pond that was there? Everything should be named for ducks. Did you chop down all the trees? Name the streets for trees. Did you kill a homeless family? I may have said too much.
